My Indian visa came through with no issues and I went to the travel clinic to get the vaccines I needed. (Thankfully, there were less this time around!) In both Canada and Australia, health insurance doesn't cover optional vaccinations, so keep this in mind if you're on a tight budget and planning a trip. In my opinion, the protection is well worth the cost.
In addition, I also came home with anti-malarial pills, a mini first aid kit, some Hydralyte and a gastro kit full of both prescription and non-prescription medication for if (okay, let's face it, probably when) my tummy gets upset. To this, I plan to add some cold and flu medication, some headache and anti-gas tablets, eczema skin cream and some melatonin supplements to help crank my sleep cycle around.
Of particular concern for me is my less than stellar tolerance of heat. I'm prone to heat sickness, my fair skin happily reddens at the merest hint sunshine, and I get sun eczema. I'll be in India at the beginning of the hot season, so I'm trying to do as much preparation as possible.
Because of this, I'm working on getting my iron levels up by eating iron rich foods (with a small glass of OJ each time - which increases iron absorption). I've got the Hydralyte to help keep properly hydrated when I sweat a lot and I'll be sure to drink a lot of (bottled) water. I'll also be taking rather a lot of sunscreen and a hat to protect my skin. I'll only be a week in Delhi, and then I'll be heading up into the mountains, which by all accounts is much cooler.
