I figured I could either hide in my hotel room, or get out there and see things. I went with the second option. I own that I was quite intimidated by the Delhi Metro, but I wasn't about to let a little intimidation stand in the way of exploration! I walked to the station, got in line, and with a map of the metro in hand I pointed out where I wished to go. Money was exchanged and I was handed a token. Then I made the mistake of trying to go through the men's metal detector and got shooed back to the right one.
Once on the train, it was another case of being the only foreign person around, and a woman alone, at that. So there was a good amount of pointing and staring going on. No one was photographing me or touching me, though, so I just ignored it.
I made my way to Connaught Place, which is an area of concentric rings of shopping and dining. There are traditional and modern stores here, and I was able to find most of the gifts I brought home. I also stopped in for some Indian McDonald's and can proudly say I rather enjoy the McTiki sandwich!
However, it was still unbearably hot outside and I wanted to be home before dark for safety reasons, so I didn't stay too long before getting back on the metro. All in all, I was pretty proud of myself for getting out into Delhi on my own.
